Dr Emmauel Mukambo recognized for outstanding research presentation

SOFAR MSc student Dr Emmanuel Mukambo was awarded a travel grant to attend and present at the 5th African Stroke Organization Conference, held from 3–5 November 2025. At the conference, he delivered an oral presentation titled “Premature Atherosclerosis as a Risk Factor for Ischemic Stroke in Young People with HIV in Lusaka, Zambia.” His presentation earned him the Best Oral Abstract Presenter Award, recognizing the significance and quality of his research.

He is also one of the recipients of the 2025 Early Career Small Grant, awarded by the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) in partnership with the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). This competitive grant supports early-career researchers undertaking innovative clinical and scientific work. With this funding, Emmanuel will investigate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of syphilis in adult neurology patients at the University Teaching Hospital in Zambia—an area of growing clinical importance.

In addition, Emmanuel recently published two peer-reviewed research articles: The association of premature atherosclerosis with ischemic stroke in young people with HIV in Lusaka, Zambia The association of antiretroviral therapy type and duration of use with stroke in people living with HIV in Zambia These achievements reflect his dedication to advancing neurological and infectious disease research in Zambia and contributing to improved patient outcomes through evidence-based practice
