On 27 May, the Biomedical Research and Training Institute proudly unveiled its new Parent & Baby Room at the Health Research Unit offices—marking a meaningful step toward a more inclusive, supportive, and forward-thinking workplace.
Designed with both care and practicality in mind, the space offers a warm, child-friendly environment where little ones can play safely while parents remain connected to their work—whether attending meetings or collaborating with colleagues. The room also features a private breastfeeding area and secure breast milk storage facilities, providing essential support for mothers transitioning back to work after maternity leave.
At its heart, this initiative reflects the power of collaboration and shared vision. Special recognition goes to SOFAR Postdoctoral Fellow Dr Nyasha Dzavakwa, whose leadership and passion brought this vibrant, nurturing space to life—helping to create an enabling environment where both families and academic excellence can thrive.
This milestone was made possible through Global EDCTP3 prize funding, awarded to Professor Rashida Ferrand, SOFAR Training Chair and Lead, in Kigali in 2025, in recognition of her outstanding scientific excellence and leadership.
