We’re excited to celebrate Fiona Gambanga and Jayjay Karumazondo, who have started PhD studies in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London. Both are enrolled as SOFAR Fellows affiliated with the Biomedical Research and Training Institute (BRTI) in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Fiona’s research focuses on understanding the role of Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy (HDP) in the development of chronic hypertension among young adult women in Zimbabwe. Her study, linked to the SHEAR Zim project, will explore pregnancy-related risk factors and long-term cardiovascular outcomes in young women.
“I’m very grateful for this opportunity to advance my epidemiology and research skills, while working in my home country. I’m so excited and can’t wait to see where this new chapter takes me.”
Jayjay’s ethnographic study explores what well-being or ‘feeling good’ means to adolescents in the rural community of Tsakare, Zimbabwe. Through participant observation, interviews, and focus group discussions, the study aims to deepen understanding of adolescent well-being within cultural and social contexts—and inform more responsive interventions.
“I believe meaningful change starts with listening. This research gives voice to young people’s lived experiences of wellbeing in their own words and communities.”
We look forward to the insights their work will bring for health and well-being in Zimbabwe and beyond.
