Emilia Juceline Eugénio de Carvalho Fumane is a SOFAR Fellow from Mozambique begins her PhD in Epidemiology and Population Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). During her stay in London, Emilia participated in the university’s induction and doctoral skills training programmes and met with her academic supervisors as she launched her doctoral research.

Her PhD project aims to evaluate patient outcomes within Mozambique’s integrated tuberculosis (TB) and HIV treatment programme. Specifically, she will compare outcomes between patients newly diagnosed with HIV who initiate treatment within the integrated programme and patients who were already receiving HIV treatment at the time of enrolment. In addition, her research will explore the perceived challenges and benefits of the integrated care model from the perspectives of both patients and healthcare professionals, generating evidence to inform improvements in service delivery and policy.

Emilia is a medical doctor, holding a degree from the Instituto Superior de Ciências e Tecnologia de Moçambique (ISCTEM) and a Master’s in Public Health from Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM). She has built a strong career in scientific research and public health promotion, contributing meaningfully to the strengthening of Mozambique’s health sector.

Currently, Emilia serves as Head of the Department of Research, Training, and Health Surveys at the INS Delegation in Maputo City and is a researcher at the Instituto Nacional de Saúde (INS), where her work focuses on health system strengthening and the impact of public policies on population health. She is also a member of the National Health Bioethics Committee (CNBS), contributing to the development and implementation of ethical guidelines for biomedical research in Mozambique.
